Vapes, Drugs & Alcohol: What Parents and Caregivers Should Know

Today's nicotine, marijuana, and alcohol products are very different from those of previous generations. Many are designed to look harmless, blend in with everyday items, or appeal to young people through colorful packaging, sweet flavors, and discreet designs. Disposable vapes may resemble highlighters, USB drives, or cosmetic products. Marijuana products can look like candy, gummies, chocolates, beverages, or baked goods. Alcohol may be hidden in water bottles, sports drink containers, or other common items. As products continue to evolve, it can be difficult for parents and caregivers to recognize what they are seeing.

This section is designed to help you become familiar with the appearance of common vaping devices, marijuana products, alcohol products, disguised items, and drug paraphernalia that you may encounter. You'll also learn about the signs of nicotine and marijuana use, warning signs that may indicate a young person needs support, and important information about fentanyl awareness and overdose prevention.

The goal of this resource is not to create fear or encourage suspicion. Instead, it is intended to provide accurate, up-to-date information that empowers parents and caregivers to recognize potential concerns, ask informed questions, and have honest, supportive conversations with the young people in their lives. Remember, finding an unfamiliar item or noticing a single warning sign does not automatically mean a child is using substances. Looking at the full picture, maintaining open communication, and building trust are some of the most effective ways to support your child's health, safety, and well-being.
